4. Dean Haglund’s X- FILES Improv show, Edinburgh Festival 2007

On Saturday 11th August my husband, myself and a female friend set off on a 250 mile journey to Edinburgh. The place was packed with all different nationalities and Pete had to park the car 3 miles away from the venue we were going to! My friend Denise and I looked around the shops then after an Italian dinner we headed for The Lot. It’s a renovated church with a bistro downstairs and bar with stage upstairs. As I’m disabled we used the lift and actually arrived before anyone else, so got the front seats which were around tables. Just after 8.45pm Dean came on stage and the madcap mayhem began! Using audience participation we all created an X File from scratch. And he stated that if the evening sucked it was our fault! LOL!
Cor! My back is killing me!
One of the funniest moments was when he got this guy to play Agent Mulder and Dean was of course Langley. He had handed out pieces of scrap paper and asked us to write any sentence we wanted. Then these bits of paper were put on the stage. Dean and this guy created this dialogue and kept adding a sentence chosen by the audience. You can imagine how crazy that got! My friend was laughing so hard she spat red wine all over me! I was in complete hysterics, as was the rest of the audience.
In order for Dean to re-create his old XF character he simply just donned a pair of those thick glasses! So I said he needed a blonde wig? He replied that it was HIS own hair in the series. I said I knew that, but he needed one that night (as his hair is now short.) He told us that would be TOO weird! The show only lasted about 50 mins, which was a shame. And he thought we were the weirdest audience he’d ever had!
Afterwards I waited until folk had said hello to him, then walked over and had a chat with him about stuff and about how a certain network sucks!

We talked 9/11 conspiracies (he’s SO into that), my husbands career as a tree surgeon… I told him I take the piss and sing the Lumberjack song from Monty Python! I also ended up telling him about a website I was no longer with and how badly I had been treated there. He showed genuine concern and said he was sorry this had happened to me. And we talked about how unfortunately in all fandoms you always get the way too obsessed fans as well as the nice ones. He asked me if I was staying to see any more shows at the fringe festival? I told him that sadly we couldn’t as we had to travel home, and would probably be home by 7am (and I wasn’t too far off!) He was amazed we’d traveled 250 miles! I’d brought a few photos from when I met him at the Expo Con and asked him if he wouldn’t mind signing one? He did and then insisted on signing the second one as well, with a different motto! Then my pal Denise took a photo of us.
I gave him a thank you and we said goodbye. But later while she and I were waiting for my husband to pick us up outside the venue, Dean came out with several of the Lot staff. I said a quick ‘bye’ and he replied ‘You take care!’ I then said I’d email him every now and then, to which he replied that would be really nice. He’s such a lovely guy and I’m pleased to have met him again.
